Costa Rica Tarcoles

Waste Management of Rio Grande

The Rio Grande is the largest and most polluted rivers of Costa Rica. Contaminated by sewage from many cities that crosses the river discharges its waste into the Pacific Ocean and massive amounts of garbage fail every day on the beaches. In order to alert the government and municipal authorities on emergency to act against this ecological disaster, Ouroboros Team in June 2009 initiated a dialogue with communities Tarcoles (municipalities, local associations, schools …).
The collaborations primary goal to establish an effective cleaning of beaches and a wide collection of plastic waste invading the coast. These materials, once recovered, will be used by artists for the manufacture of a sculpture in the village, then to the more spectacular, a giant ouroboros visible satellite.

Featured in June 2009:

SCULPTURE: The first cultural event will take place with the villagers at the site of the sculpture Tarcoles. The work consists of plastic bottles assembled around a dead tree will be decorated with slogans on the theme of environmental protection such as “No mas plastico!”.
It is to educate local people about the problem of pollution of the Rio Grande and the ocean, and encourage them to participate in achieving more ambitious than a second event, organized around a ouroboros giant set-terrestrial being underwater.
OUROBOROS GIANT: The work to be attended by the population and local actors, will be conducted using a net placed at the mouth of the river over two miles long. So tight in the sea, this trap will gather waste forming a vast semicircle of plastic on the water. The artists will complete the half-circle floating in a semicircle on earth consists of materials collected. The whole will form a spectacular ouroboros photographed by satellite. Through this artistic initiative born of local issues, Ouroboros Team wants to raise awareness of the urgency of the waste management and encourage the authorities to do so.
